Effect of Liver Extract to Liver Regeneration in Albino Rats

Abstract
The liver cell regeneration is a steady process in normal healthy condition, but certain extrinsic factors such as injury or hepatotoxic agents promote the rate of regeneration. Recently, some investigators reported that hepatic humoral factors originating from liver itself accelerate the regeneration of liver, while the others claimed that liver homogenates inhibited the regeneration
rate.
To observe the characteristics of the effect of the liver homogenates, this, experiment was performed. Healthy male albino rats were injected with 2ml of liver extract intraperitoneally after partial hepatectomy, and the control animals received 2ml of normal saline at 6:00 A. M.
The livers were removed 24, 32, 48 and 72 hours after treatment and processed in routine histo¡þchemical procedures.
Mean mitotic indices of regenerating liver cell of every animal were determined and discussed. The results obtained are as follows:
1. The liver extract significantly accelerated the liver cell regeneration in the partial hepatectomized male albino rats.
2. The liver cell regeneration was more rapid in hepatectomized groups than in control groups regardless the injected material.
3. The regeneration rate reached the peak between 32 and 48 hours after injection of liver extract.
